Drift variants of influenza B/Victoria
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have recently described the emergence of new antigenically drifted viruses of the influenza B/Victoria-lineage. Over the 2016/2017 season, 20% of tested influenza B/Victoria viruses are antigenically distinct from the reference virus belonging to the components of the current vaccines. These viruses have several amino acid changes, including two amino acid deletions in the HA gene at position 162 and 163 (referred to as the “B/Victoria deletion variant subgroup”).
Fast Track Diagnostics assay targets another gene than the HA. Further, in silico analyses indicate all FTD influenza B virus kits detect these drifted viruses.
